It’s not just when the kids are toddlers that you’ll need 1 parent at home. Apparently when the kids hit puberty they’re just as much work (if not more...)
WOW, this was such a great response from the Q&A. I want to share this video with so many people. I think Louise Perry’s greatest strength is re-packaging a lot of forgotten common-sense ideas in a way that is particularly articulate that the modern person can understand
I think, if a close friend or sibling asked me whether so-and-so was good spouse material, I would just say "yes" regardless of what I thought privately. In my experience when a friend asks for your advice, they are really looking for validation of their current opinion, and if your opinion is different to theirs they'll probably go with their own. Is it bad that I would just go along with that even if I had secret misgivings?
I think if people really want to take advantage of their friends' opinions, they have to look for faint praise. "Oh yeah, he was... nice." If your friends actually like someone, they will be more effusive.
"Economically Inactive" is a crap way of describing women who don't work. Even if they are not earning enough to pay into the treasury that doesn't invalidate all the many ways (many hidden but significant) they contribute to the economy and the health and wealth being of the individuals in the family and those in the community around them they serve....
Really a well thought through and articulated response. I might point out though that the premise of the question and most of the points of your response are somewhat self-centered and apply only to the middle and upper classes which is a small percentage of the population. My second point is simply that for decades now modern feminism has denigrated men to the point men are joked about in terms of only being needed for sex and to take out the trash. Be careful what you wish for because it seems to me that the young men dating my daughters are really only good for those two things or maybe just one of them so at least the trash gets taken out. Men will rise to whatever level you demand of them societally. The thing that inspires me about your work is that you are pushing back on some of these feminist tropes and although you are swimming Upstream, hopefully some level-headed women that read your book will see the wisdom in it and stop believing their girl boss sisters who have been lying to them. Not an easy thing to do but there you have it.

This is definitely a thing. There's a classic Onion article about it: https://www.theonion.com/man-back-with-woman-his-best-friend-spent-week-criticiz-1819566343
