I've been rewatching a few Disney films lately with my eldest, and the waving away of the fundamental conflict between familial obligation and self-actualisation is striking. A young girl goes on an adventure, saves the day, and then returns home where her previously-conservative family have converted to her newfangled ways. You could read too much into it, but it's a rather rosy tale.
American Pastoral by Philip Roth is amazing. I've thought about that book so many times as we've lived through the past decade, and I'm sure it will be on my mind a lot more as we go through the next one.
The era and its undercurrent does crop up in popular culture from time to time. Running on Empty is a good River Phoenix movie. It's a background theme in The Americans. Mean Streets starts with de Niro bombing a mailbox for the hell of it, which I assume is because that's the sort of thing that was happening at the time.
Homer's mother is on the run in The Simpsons! (though I can't remember what for)
American Pastoral is my favorite Philip Roth novel and captures well the terrorism of the late 1960s/early 1970s.
honoured to be described as 'friend of the pod'. thank you!
My historical knowledge has been incredibly enhanced by reading Ed West’s newsletter! He’s definitely a top friend of the pod 👏
Thank you!
